Change is the Norm. Creativity is the Standard.
I first started Lytspeed Communications in 1997 as a hand-coded HTML site with a database attached. Over the years, it has changed a lot. The domain changed from Lytspeed.net to Lyspeed.com. The hand-coded site became a b2evolution site, which eventually morphed into several different WordPress versions.
A lot has changed in my life over the years, too. Jobs, relationships, and pets have come and gone, but the one constant has remained creativity of some sort, whether in words, music, or a fusion of both. Whenever times have been hard, creativity has been the best therapy.
Adding Publishing to the Pile.
Recently, this has taken a more formal turn. During the pandemic, I completed my Bachelor of Arts in English, a degree I had abandoned nearly 35 years prior. That opened the door for me to enter a masters program at Western Colorado University under the tutelage of Kevin J. Anderson. I now hold a Master of Arts in Creative Writing with a Concentration in Publishing. My capstone project was to republish the 1918 volume Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, with notes by Robert Bridges, Hopkins’ friend and publisher. I was also on the editing team for Chaotic Cupids: When Love Goes Awry, the anthology published by my Western Publishing cohort. (Both books are available in the shop on this site.)
I’m certainly no stranger to editing; I’ve worn editing hats in many different scenarios, starting nearly 40 years ago. I’ve also done publishing and book composition before, but the last time was at the dawn of the indie publishing era, for Rough Road Press in about 2010. As you might expect from the theme of this post, things change. I’m glad to have the knowledge from the masters degree as I put my toes back into the ever-changing indie publishing world.
My initial publishing projects will be passion projects, either my own work or work in service to others. But if all goes well, I hope to expand to publishing other poets, short story authors, and novelists in the future.
